Deja Vu And Past Lives

Ever felt as if you have been here before? Or been somewhere strangely familiar without being able to place it?

Ever felt as if you have been here before? Or been somewhere strangely familiar without being able to place it? Déjà vu is a phenomenon that leaves many of us curious and full of questions and as much as 70 percent of the population reports to having experienced some form of déjà vu. A higher number of incidents occur in people 15 to 25 years old than in any other age group. Many spiritualists and parapsychologists believe that the younger the brain the more frequent the déjà due to the “soul” being so new to earth carrying less baggage it can perhaps remember more about the previous life. Yes! Some actually believe that déjà is a memory of a past life, in the sense that you have been tested before, many times.

What is fascinating is that children who claim to remember a previous life have been found in many parts of the world, particularly in areas where the concept of reincarnation is accepted "as in the Buddhist and Hindu countries of South Asia". There are also cases "among the Shiite peoples of Lebanon and Turkey, the tribes of West Africa, and the American Northwest. Stevenson has collected over 2,600 reported cases of past life memories of which 65 detailed reports have been published. Specific information from the children's memories has been collected and matched with the data of their former identity, family, residence, and manner of death."

Many people also talk about experiencing déjà vu during very relaxed states of mind, such as meditation. From a scientific perspective Déjà vu has been firmly associated with temporal-lobe epilepsy which is a condition characterized by recurrent seizures. . Reportedly, déjà vu can occur just prior to a temporal-lobe seizure. People suffering a seizure of this kind can experience déjà vu during the actual seizure activity or in the moments between convulsions. The basic concept is that there are portions of the brain that are specialized for the past, the present and the future. In general, the frontal lobes are concerned with the future, the temporal lobes are concerned with the past, and the underlying, intermediate portions (the limbic system) are concerned with the present. When these are all doing their normal thing, in normal states of consciousness, the feeling that 'something is going to happen will only come up when we are thinking about the future, worrying about it, anticipating it or making plans for it. The sense of the past will only come up when our memories have been triggered in some way.

The actual term déjà vu is French and means, literally, "already seen." When we experience the feeling we usually feel an overwhelming sense of familiarity with something that shouldn't be familiar at all, yet we can’t quite put our finger on why it is actually happening to us. You might be packing the shopping away for example and experience a “dream like” feeling that the exact process has happened before but it is strangely distinctive. For example you might see a boy with a blue bag passing you by just as you were packing the shopping away which almost seems like you’ve lived a double life at the time. It is a feeling of mystery and not one of us can really prove why it happens.

Some researchers suggest that we carry around many fragmented memories from this life as well as past life experiences which all connects with the feelings of déjà vu; the same can also apply when we experience reoccurring dreams that have no real significance in our waking lives. It is believed that we store the memories of our previous lives in the back of our sub consciousness. The moment of déjà vu is said to occur due to a familiarity about the people, situation or surroundings. The memory rises to the surface and can sometimes even leave us feeling haunted because it has not been fully processed. Even reoccurring thoughts, such as compulsive thoughts can be linked to past lives as again research speaks about the need to clear away old thoughts before being reborn into the next life.

Researchers say that the spiritual purpose of compulsive thoughts is to force the individual to seek the answer as to why they are now being "plagued" with thoughts and behaviours that they have "no control over". When the life lesson associated with the thought has been fully learned and "absorbed" into the individual's body and -mind, the "disempowering" trait or behaviour will gradually fade away. Many people have explored their past lives due to strong déjà vu experiences and discovered some interesting information by either seeing a past life regression therapist or by using a past life regression hypnosis MP3 – you might even find some answers to your own questions by investigating your own experiences a little further.

Things to do when experiencing déjà vu:

Notice sensations in the body
Notice clothes, smells, people
Keep a note pad – write down what you experience
Think about what you were doing at the time of that déjà – how does it seem familiar?
It is wise to disconnect the sense from the past and then try to see the present through that same sense
