Common Body Language Mistakes That Create The Wrong Impression

When you’re meeting someone in the flesh for the first time, body language and creating a positive first impression are the two most important factors to consider. These meaningful gestures are way more important than wearing the right outfit or making sure that you don’t have food stuck in your teeth.

Body language conveys far more than we actually speak. If you want to make a lasting and attractive first impression there are a number of gestures that you need to avoid. Any of the following body language signs could seriously spoil your chances of impressing someone.

The Limp Handshake

The handshake is the true physical test of your character. A firm handshake with direct eye-to-eye contact says you have confidence, charisma and sincerity. The recipient of your handshake will probably think you are also caring, trustworthy and genuine. On the other hand, if your handshake is as limp as a lettuce leaf in a heatwave, the impression that you are giving is less than favorable. Limp hand shakers are considered to be weak-willed, untrustworthy, and not someone you want to entertain.

Distracted Glancing

When you’re having a one-to-one conversation it’s polite to look at the other person when you are talking to, and listening to them. Glancing over their shoulder or off into the distance screams that you’re not giving your full attention. No one likes to talk to someone who looks bored or disinterested. Focus on the other person and make direct eye contact from time to time.

Intense Staring

Whilst distracted glancing can be off-putting intense staring can come across as intimidating and scary. Staring directly into someone’s eyes can make them feel uncomfortable in your company, and can also be interpreted as a sign of aggression. Unless you’re having an intimate moment with your lover, keep the gaze soft and relaxed, without looking distracted.

Fussing & Fidgeting

People who have a habit of fidgeting or fussing with their hair or clothing tend to do so out of nervousness or worry. Fidgeting is distracting and suggests that you lack confidence. If you are meeting someone who makes you feel anxious try to avoid fidgeting by placing your hands out of view, in your pockets. In extreme cases you could even consider sitting on them!

Checking Your Watch Or Phone

Regardless of whether you have another appointment, if you want to make a good impression avoid constantly checking your watch or mobile phone. Not only is this habit annoying but it also confirms that you have something better to do instead. Turn your phone off for the duration of your meeting or date, and give the other person your full and undivided attention.

Animated Gestures

Some people can’t help but be highly animated when they talk. They often use big, exaggerated hand and arm movements and usually don’t even realize that they are doing so. Whilst it’s ok to use your hands to explain a visual element of your story, continually making animated gestures is just not on. If this is your habit, try to talk without moving your hands at all. Hold them in your lap, or place them in your pockets.

Folding Your Arms Across Your Chest

The biggest no-no body language sign that you could possibly make is defensively crossing your arms across your chest. This immediately says ‘back off’ or ‘keep away’ and instantly gets the other person’s back up. Although you may simply be crossing your arms because it feels comfortable, or you don’t know what to do with your arms, the message you are putting out loud and clear is a serious one. Keep your arms by your sides or hold something to avoid creating a distance.
