What if achieving your dreams is as simple as making a wish? Well, success and happiness are easily within your grasp, according to the bestselling self help book, The Secret. Its author, Rhonda Byrne, wrote that a spiritual law - called the Law of Attraction - can create life-changing results for you, including improved health, wealth and happiness.
What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction is one of 12 Universal Laws, which are a set of spiritual rules about the universe and everything inside it. The Laws are based upon the idea that everything is energy. Physical beings - people and animals - are energy, but your thoughts, words, feelings and actions are energy, too. Energy vibrates at different frequencies, with positive attracting positive, and negative attracting negative. So, every thought, feeling and action contributes to creating your experience of life.
The Law of Attraction was brought to popular attention by the 2006 film and bestselling book, called The Secret, with television talk show star Oprah Winfrey devoting two episodes of her US show to it. But the universal laws are not new because they have always existed in nature.
Unlocking The Secret
Try these techniques, which are discussed in the book The Secret, to access the power of the Law of Attraction.
1) Like attracts Like
The Law of Attraction is based on the idea that your thoughts create your reality. This means that the thoughts you have can become your experience of life. In the Law of Attraction, the power of thoughts is compared to a transmission tower sending out a frequency to the universe which returns the same frequency to you.
Explained very simply, it is the idea that: like attracts like. So the thoughts and deeds you send out will be attracted back to you.
If you dwell on negative thoughts, such as:
'I can't find a job'
'I'm not worthy of love'
'I never have any money'
This becomes how other people perceive you, how you see yourself and so, eventually, becomes your reality. If you're always worried about becoming ill - you might attract the very thing you are worried about to you. This is a controversial idea to some people but spirituality can often be challenging.
On the other side of this idea, if you think and feel positively, you will attract back positive events and situations. So if you think - and really believe:
'This project will be a success'
'I am confident'
'I feel happy'
'I will always have enough money'
Then by radiating positivity, you will attract it back. Of course you have to play your part - if you decide a project will be successful but then don't put in the hard work necessary, it will probably not fulfil its potential.
2) Manifest your Dreams
To work with the Law of Attraction, you need to believe good things will happen. But it's a step further than just positive thinking. It's called 'conscious creating' through which you can manifest your dreams. One way top do this is through visualisation. You create a vision in your mind of what you desire. This powerfully focuses your intention and sends out a clear and strong message to the universe. For instance, if you want to achieve a promotion at work, visualise yourself doing the work that your promotion would entail. See yourself happy and smiling - perhaps shaking your boss's hand as s/he congratulates you on the promotion.
As with all spiritual techniques, you must ensure what you are asking for will harm none and is for your highest good - so not greedy or selfish.
3) Practice Gratitude
Being grateful is like giving back to the universe - instead of taking all the time. It will raise your energy so you can attract positive outcomes and it affirms you truly believe good fortune will come to you. Think of three things in your life that you are grateful for. Perhaps this is your children, your work, your home, your pet, the fact you have access to clean water, food and the ability to heat your home. Or perhaps you are grateful for the beauty of the outdoors, for your health or for your eyesight and hearing. Choose three things you are grateful for at the start of each day and think about them for a minute each. This is sending out gratitude to the universe.
