The hearts and flowers of Valentine's Day add spice to this time of year. But once the day of romance is over, don't think you can stop making an effort! Your relationship needs nurturing all year around. No matter how long you've been together, you can have a grand passion - as long as you both keep trying to be romantic. But this doesn't mean you have to spend money on a series of grand gestures; quite the opposite! Because it's showing you care in lots of little ways that means more than money could ever buy - and will keep your relationship fizzing over with happiness.
1. Say: 'I love you'
You love your partner. So tell them! The more you express your love and affection the closer you'll both feel. These three magic words tell your partner they are wanted, appreciated and desired - a sure fire way to add romance to your relationship. Say it often but without being obsessive about it! Saying 'I love you' each day before you leave for work is ideal.
2. Hold hands
Affection demonstrates your love for your partner. So holding hands, hugging, kissing, touching the person in an affectionate, non sexual, way shows you care without wanting something in return. Physical affection is reassuring and re-enforces your love.
3. Talk to each other
Communication is king when it comes to keeping the romance alive! When you first met, it was this spark of attraction that first drew you together. While looks might have caught your attention, it was the ability to relate and chat that sustained the initial attraction. You fell in love because you enjoyed each other's company. So take the time to have proper conversations. That means refraining from the temptation to discuss children, family and household concerns. Instead, talk about your hopes, your dreams, your fears, your ambitions. Talk about films, books, passions - anything that's enjoyable. Keep your soulmate connection through communication.
4. Be realistic
Nobody can be your fairytale prince or princess - because fairytales aren't real! While it might seem unromantic to talk about being realistic, it's really not! Because accepting your partner's foibles and flaws and loving them anyway is probably the most romantic thing you could do. It's your job to smooth over insecurities and bolster confidence - and you should expect the same in return.
5. Just the two of you
Life can get busy. But to keep the romance alive you need to make time for each other. Take at least one afternoon or evening every week (more is better!) to reconnect with your partner. Just the two of you. Share a meal, or a coffee or glass of wine but most of all talk. Catch up with how one another is feeling. Alone time gives you space from the daily grind and helps you remember why you fell in love with your partner.
6. Remember to remember
Remembering things that are important to your partner is one of the most romantic things you can do in a relationship. From happy times, such as birthdays and anniversaries to days which are painful, such as the anniversary of the death of a loved one. Celebrating and supporting each other through life is one of the joys of being part of a couple. Remember to help with the little chores in life, too. Like doing the weekly shop or washing the dishes without being asked. Remembering shows you care about your lover.
7. Give & take
Love is about compromise. Sometimes you give, other times you can take. It's the beauty of being part of a loving team. Sacrificing your desires to give your partner what they need is the ultimate romantic gesture. Of course, the favour should be returned to you next time.
8. Be kind
You're bound to get on each other's nerves from time to time! So if you're feeling angry or frustrated, take a moment before you reply to your partner to choose your words carefully. Always speak with kindness and respect. As a couple, you are both on the same team! So don't be confrontational. Work things out when you're both feeling calmer. The more often you are kind to each other, the easier it becomes - and the happier your relationship will be.
